New article by Captain Andy: Heavy metal: How did a bunch of mostly white straight right wing men somehow convince us they were the counter-culture? https://pluscorerecords.com/articles/
I’ve found a load of blank cassettes, so this year I’ve decided Pluscore should do some sort of release for Cassette Week. It seems poignant as the first ever Pluscore Record was made using a Tascam PortaStudio which records onto cassettes. I won’t be doing that for this release obviously, given as those cassettes won’t play properly on a regular two track cassette player.
The humble cassette is an underrated format. Notorious for its noise, so noisy an entire technology was invented to reduce its noisiness (Dolby) and prone to getting chewed up by the cassette player. Sometimes a biro could fix it, sometimes it was completely fucked and we had to mourn its loss. If you copied a tape to another tape the sound quality suffered… and if you copied that tape to another tape and that tape to another tape etc. etc. the sound got progressively worse, but it was cheaper than actually paying for whatever it was you were taping. If you’ve ever wondered why some of us are fans of noise-pop or lo-fi, it’s probably because we grew up listening to copies of copies of copies and are therefore used to that kind of sound.
The roadsides were once littered with the remains of cassette tapes that had been flung from car windows, presumably by motorists who were completely sick of whatever music was on said tapes. So sick, they were adamant they would never ever want to listen to these tapes ever again… ever.
So, stay tuned for October 12th.
